Supporting Veterans through winter’s challenges
February brings cold temperatures and harsh conditions, reminding us of the struggles many Canadians face this winter – including Veterans. Across the country, the Legion is working to provide vital support to those who need it. Some Veterans face challenges like homelessness, financial hardship, and difficulty accessing benefits or mental health resources. The Legion is committed to helping Veterans and their families find stability, stay in their homes longer, and receive the care they deserve.
Your support is making a difference. Invite your friends and family to join the Legion, and help strengthen our ability to serve those who served us.

Legion Members helped deliver Valentine’s Cards to Veterans
Veterans Affairs Canada partnered with Royal Canadian Legion Branches across the country in a pilot project to help school children send Valentine’s Cards to Veterans. Legion Members delivered their heartfelt cards to Veterans in their communities.
Thank you to our members for helping share the love to those who served!

Honouring Black History Month
During the month of February, we are encouraging everyone to read the stories and learn the history of Black Canadian Veterans, in honour of Black History Month.
Stories like that of Marguerite A. “Peggy” Downes who enlisted as a driver with the Royal Canadian Army Service Corps in Halifax after graduating from Dartmouth High. In 1968, Major Downes received a military decoration for 12 years of continuous service and exemplary behaviour.

Honouring the Unknown Solider: Canada’s new commemorative coin
In the heart of Canada’s capital lies the final resting place of an unidentified Canadian soldier. Though their name remains unknown, the Unknown Soldier represents all fallen Canadians, as well as the many sides of war: tragedy and sacrifice, honour and victory, but above all, unity in our desire for peace and freedom.
Did you know The Royal Canadian Legion spearheaded the project to establish a Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at the National War Memorial in Ottawa as part of Canada's Millennium celebrations? To mark the 25th anniversary of the Unknown Soldier's repatriation, the Royal Canadian Mint released a Fine Silver Proof Dollar, a Fine Silver Proof Set, and a Pure Gold Coin featuring the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
“The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is not just a monument; it is a symbol of the countless sacrifices made by Canadians in service to our country. As someone who was deeply involved in its creation, it is incredibly meaningful to see this 25th anniversary coin as a testament to those who served. This coin reflects the ongoing commitment of our nation to remember and honour all who fought for our freedoms, ensuring their sacrifices are never forgotten.” - Brigadier-General (Ret’d) Duane Daly, Past Dominion Secretary, The Royal Canadian Legion.

Free services provided to Veterans
For many of our Veterans and their families, navigating Veterans Affairs Canada benefits, compensation, and assistance programs can be a challenging experience – but Legion Command Service Officers are here to help. These highly trained professionals with government security clearance are committed to assisting still-serving and retired military Veterans, RCMP members, and their families at no cost, whether they are Legion members or not.
Unfortunately, we have been made aware that there are several organizations that are attempting to take advantage of Veterans by charging services fees, taking a cut of their awarded benefits, or offering free help and charging hidden fees. We advise Veterans to avoid these malicious services. The Legion offers trusted, free support, ensuring Veterans can get the support they need.
Veterans have made immense sacrifices in service to their country, and deserve trustworthy assistance to ensure their physical, emotional, and financial well-being.
The Legion’s Command Service Officers are allies, providing invaluable advocacy and making a significant, positive impact on lives. They can be reached at 1-877-534-4666 or via email at veteransservices@legion.ca.
