Heading into 2025, we want to take a moment to thank you, our Members. Your dedication and support throughout 2024 have made an incredible impact on the Legion’s ability to help Veterans and their families. It’s because of you that Canadians continue to honour and remember those who served. Wishing you a joyful Christmas and a happy New Year filled with peace, happiness, and success.

How the Legion is advocating for Veterans’ access to qualified service dogs |
The Royal Canadian Legion recognizes the essential role service dogs play in the treatment and rehabilitation of Veterans. Through Operation Service Dog, the Legion has provided over $2 million to help train and match 61 Veterans with service dogs, with 27 more underway. |
However, the need for government-led national training standards for service dogs remains critical. The Legion continues to advocate for these standards to ensure Veterans have consistent access to properly trained dogs. |
For Veterans living with physical injuries or operational stress injuries including PTSD, service dogs can provide a lifeline – offering support, stability, and a path to healing. By pushing for these changes, we aim to make service dogs an accessible, nationally regulated treatment option for Veterans. |

Honouring Remembrance through youth creativity |
On November 8th, students from three Gananoque, Ontario schools showcased their talents in the annual Legion National Foundation Remembrance contests. Judged by members of the Legion’s Gananoque Branch 92, the competition received approximately 160 entries from Linklater Public School, Saint Joseph Catholic School, and Gananoque Intermediate and Secondary school. |
“It amazes me how much talent these students have and the amount of work they put into their entries,” said judge Pat Fitzgerald. |
Winners from all local Legion levels advance to provincial competitions, with those winning entries competing at the national level for the 2025 awards. These works of art serve as a tribute to Veterans and a reminder of the importance of Remembrance for Canada’s youth. |

The Legion and Calgary Grey Cup Committee Honour Veterans for second year in a row |
The Royal Canadian Legion and the Calgary Grey Cup Committee (CGCC) celebrated Veterans and Western hospitality at the 2nd Annual Stampede Breakfast and VIP Reception during the 111thGrey Cup Festival. Hosted at the Legion Billy Bishop Branch 176 in Vancouver, the event brought together Grey Cup fans, dignitaries, and Legion Members for a day of food, fun, and heartfelt tributes. |
Attendees enjoyed a traditional pancake breakfast, live entertainment, and appearances from notable guests including CFL commissioner Randy Ambrosie. A highlight of the event was the White Hat Ceremony, where Veterans Don Hitsman and Josh Muir were honoured for their service. |
Looking ahead to 2025, the Legion and CGCC will continue this meaningful tradition at the 112th Grey Cup in Winnipeg, supporting Veterans and fostering Remembrance across Canada. |

A Legion Branch is not a building, it’s its Members! |
A Legion Branch is more than just a building – it’s the spirit and dedication of its Members. Despite the Legion Branch in St. Alban’s, NL being physically closed for two years, a passionate group of Legion and community members came together to restore their war memorial. Their efforts ensured that Remembrance Day at the memorial would continue, and that Veterans could be honoured year round. |
This inspiring project highlights the power of community and the enduring importance of Remembrance. A great job by all who were involved! |
