A month dedicated to building strong communities |
The Legion’s presence in communities is important, and worth celebrating. From Legion Week to charting the course of the organization, to Track and Field Championships, the lasting impact of what we can accomplish together is important to keep in top of mind. When we build stronger communities – be it Veterans, volunteers or youth – we all benefit. |
This is especially true this time of year, with the Remembrance period and Poppy Campaign just around the corner. While we celebrate the difference our Branches make, keep in mind there will be countless more opportunities to make an impact in the months to come. |

Meet your new Dominion President
|
The Royal Canadian Legion has elected Berkley Lawrence as the new Dominion President during the organization’s 49th Dominion Convention held in Saint John, New Brunswick from August 25-28. “I’m proud of the work our organization has achieved to date, and I look forward to more positive growth as we continue to focus on the needs of our Veterans,” said Lawrence, upon his installation as the new leader. “I’m honored to be elected.” You can read more in this news article. |
The Convention was a success in modernization following the first-ever on-site electronic voting through the newly introduced Convention App. Close to one thousand delegates engaged with twenty guest speakers on a variety of important issues, heard updates, and voted on resolutions. We are looking forward to the 2026 Convention in Winnipeg for The Royal Canadian Legion’s 100th anniversary! |

Legion Week celebrations
|
Congratulations to Legion Branches on another successful Legion Week, held September 15 – 21. This celebratory event is an opportunity for Branches to showcase what they do for Veterans, Remembrance, and their communities, and helps drive traffic to Branches — which in turn helps attract new members and volunteers! |

Legion Nationals Youth Track and Field Championships
|
Over 965 young athletes from across Canada competed in 84 events in Calgary, Alberta for the Legion National Youth Track and Field Championships on August 9 – 11, marking the Games’ largest contingent of athletes ever. This was the 46th year for the event organized by The Royal Canadian Legion, the only national track and field competition for the under-16 and under-18 categories. This year’s Games also commemorated the 10th anniversary of the end of Canada’s mission in Afghanistan. |

Miscalculation of Disability Pensions Class Action Settlement
|
Earlier this year, Veterans Affairs Canada [VAC] settled a class action lawsuit relating to the miscalculation of disability pension benefits payable between 2003 and 2023 to disabled Canadian Armed Forces and RCMP veterans and their survivors. Living veterans will receive their settlement payments automatically from VAC and consequently there is no action required on their part. |
However, there are a large number of Estates of deceased veterans, family members or survivors of veterans who are eligible to receive a significant payment. On average, claims are worth about $2,500. However, there are 40 people who are eligible for payments over $35,000 and approx. 2,000 for payments over $10,000 |
The entire claims process is being administered by KPMG, who have created a website where claims can be made here. |
The deadline to make a claim is on March 19, 2025. KPMG have also established a toll-free call center to answer questions (1-833-839-0648). |
